Job title
Sociologist of inequalities, specialising in gender issues
Begining date
25/11/2024
Job description
The selected sociologist of inequalities will analyse forms of domination connected with gender, race, and economic dimensions. They will be studying rural areas in the Global South, where these intersectional approaches to inequalities have yet to be developed in their own right.
You will be responsible for studying agrarian transformations and their implications in terms of inequalities. These transformations are to be investigated at different levels (household, farm, community, etc.) and with close reference to local environmental issues and the territorial contexts of transition policies and projects (agro-ecological, food, energy, citizen, etc.).
Your research questions may relate to:
· the (re)production of inequalities and discriminations in and through public action – particularly in terms of development and transitions
· inequalities in access to and use of resources (natural, political, financial, territorial, etc.)
The aim is to add a specific, cross-disciplinary view of the issue of inequalities, to our multidisciplinary practices in the social sciences, and also to build, with the agronomic sciences, innovative projects on transitions in development, from which lessons can be learned.
You will therefore conduct a critical analysis of the social relations of gender, class, race, etc. in the rural environments of the Global South, from the making of public policies to the effects of so-called “development” projects. In doing so, you will shed new light on the constraints and levers of transition, and contribute to the analysis of public policies to reduce inequalities in their many dimensions. You will need to develop specific research into social inequalities and dominations within broader projects and programmes.
Desired profiled
You have a PhD in sociology, and specialise in issues of inequality (gender, social, racial).
You are fluent in English and preferably have experience in a country of the Global South and in studying transitions.
You are keen to conduct field research in tropical and intertropical rural areas, in Sub-Saharan Africa or Latin America and the Caribbean, on subjects relating to family farming, agro-ecological transition and natural resource management, responses to climate change, territorial development and public policy.
You will be working in close collaboration with rural organisations and local development actors, in what may sometimes be sensitive political contexts.
You will be working in a team with researchers and teacher-researchers from partner laboratories and institutions in the Global South and will be part of the host institution’s organisation and your host team’s work dynamic.
