Job title

SEMI-ARID REGION CROP GENETICS AND BREEDING RESEARCHER F/M

Begining date

04/01/2021

Job description

Crops in semi-arid regions (sorghum, millet, fonio, etc.), often referred to as “dryland cereals”, are an essential component of the agrosystems of Sahelian West Africa. They are crucial for the food and nutritional security of rural families and they have shown significant adaptability to the effects of climate change. In addition, they form an integral part of the value chains which contribute to improving the income of farmers.
The purpose of dryland cereal varietal improvement programmes, led by national institutes of agricultural research in partnership with CIRAD, is to develop varietal innovations which meet the needs of agro-ecological intensification and the expectations of the stakeholders of the value chains. These programmes also build on the regional momentum generated via the Regional Center of Excellence CERAAS (Centre d'Étude Régional pour l'Amélioration de l'Adaptation à la Sécheresse) and the platform in partnership for research and training “nnovation and Varietal Improvement in West Africa” (IAVAO, https://www.iavao.org/en)

In this context, CIRAD is recruiting a researcher in plant breeding and genetics to support millet and sorghum improvement programmes in West Africa and contribute to their modernisation.
Your responsibilities will be to contribute to defining varietal types and ideotypes to be developed, to identify the breeding methodologies best suited to the specific characteristics of these two species and to support the implementation of these strategies in the partners's breeding programmes of IAVAO. In addition, you will contribute to the implementation of quality assessment protocols and the digitisation of these breeding programmes.
You will conduct your activities in the form of regional research projects involving a number of stakeholders, including several national programmes and several CIRAD researchers.
More specifically, you will be responsible for:
- Identifying the breeding strategies and phenotyping and genotyping technologies best suited to achieve the breeding objectives defined with the breeders and stakeholders of the value chains,
- Helping design experiments and acquire phenotypic data making it possible to mainstream the agro-ecological component in varietal improvement,
- Analysing data during the breeding process, in conjunction with the breeders, to translate it into breeding decisions,
- Publishing the results of this research in international journals,
- Playing a part in setting up and implementing national and international projects, as well as in the scientific coordination of the teams and network of partners.

In terms of calendar, after an Initial period in Montpellier, you will be posted in West Africa".

- Enthusiasm for experimentation and fieldwork
- Good research practices
‒ Strong motivation to work in a team and across disciplines
‒ Ability to build and run collaborative projects with development and research partners
‒ Scientific writing skills
