Job title

Specialist agronomist/agricultural scientist researcher in analysing large-scale data

Begining date

Job description

When it comes to assessing the productivity, environmental impact and economic efficiency of agricultural systems in developing countries, it is important to be able to analyse and compare the performance of the systems at a large-scale. In this context, Cirad is recruiting a specialist in global agronomy to participate in developing this new research front. The researcher will contribute to develop responses to global challenges regarding food safety, climate change and the development of efficient and sustainable food chains in developing countries. While working on cross-disciplinary efforts, the researcher will be posted to the HortSys Research Unit.

Global agronomy aims to i) compare the performances of agricultural systems at a large-scale and understand how yields vary depending on different production or intensification pathways, ii) forecast harvests in the context of food security, iii) quantify the impact of climate change on agricultural production both regionally and globally and, iv) study the relationships between the diversity of production methods and consumption by better understanding the relationships between global agricultural and food systems.

The person recruited will have the following main objective: to identify the levels, variability and determinants of productivity and performance for different horticultural systems and agricultural production methods at the regional, continental and global levels by analysing data acquired at the plot level. The person recruited will also help develop, structure and analyse databases allowing for the synthesis and comparison between sites of a group of mixed agronomy and agro-ecology data.

Cirad promotes research placements in developing countries. After an initial posting to Montpellier, a posting abroad is to be envisaged.
